INTRODUCTION

You are an eleven year old English citizen living outside London in the 1620's.  Your local area has become very crowded.  One day at school, you overhear some adults talking about new possibilities and new beginnings in the recently established thirteen colonies.  You become very excited hearing this and think it might be a wonderful opportunity for your family.  Before you approach your parents, you decide to do a little digging and find out where your family should live.

TASK

In the course of making a decision for your family, you will research each of the thirteen colonies.  At this time, you are simply researching each colonial region for important information.  Some important things to consider include:

  • The geography of the area

  • Religious practices in the colonies

  • Reasons for settlement of the colonies.

  • Climate of the area

  • Food in the colonies

  • Education for the colonists

  • Having FUN in the colonies!!

Upon completion of your research and information chart, you will have the opportunity to choose TWO of the following projects to persuade your parents to move to the colony of your choice.

Written Project Choices (Choose one):

  • Projects must demonstrate an understanding of the culture and characteristics of the colony of your choice.  The project must persuade your family to move to America!

  1. Poster

  2. A Power Point Presentation including eight slides.

  3. A six-paneled Travel Brochure

Cultural Project Choices (Choose one):

  1. Find two songs that colonists may have enjoyed in the 1600's and share those with the class.

  2. Find a wonderful colonial recipe, make some samples, and bring to class to share.

  3. Share an old colonial kids game.  Write directions and teach the class to play!!

  4. Dress up as an authentic colonist from the 1600's.  (Only serious colonists need apply:)

  5. Build a model of a colonial village, home, school, church, or similar structure important to the colonists in the 1600's and 1700's.

  • Cooper

  • Gunsmith

  • Printer

  • Shoemaker

Begin work on your projects!!

**All Colonial Information Charts must be completed before you begin work on the written and cultural portions of your webquest.  Mrs. Anthes will set a date for completion.  If you finish early, you will be allowed to choose your colony and project.

EVALUATION

For this project, you will be graded on the written portion of your project using the attached rubric (coming soon!).  The written portion of your project will be worth 60% of your Web Quest grade.  The other 40% will consist of your cultural presentation.  A rubric will soon follow:)

You will also be evaluated on your oral presentation.  As always, you should practice your speech, volume, eye contact, and pace many times before the presentation.  You will be given one week's notice of your presentation date to provide ample time for practice.

CONCLUSION

By the conclusion of this project, you should have gained a deeper understanding of the settlement, history, and culture of the Original Thirteen Colonies.  Upon completion and after hearing other students share about their colony, you should be able to make comparisons between your colony and other colonies.
